Taman Ilmu. The Indonesian word Bustanul translates into the word Taman in Malay; The word Ulum translates into the word Ilmu in Malay. Islam is knowledge and a way of life, and we wanted to express that. This mosque was seen beyond just a place of prayer and ritual but a place for ideas, contemplation and dialogue. The form of the mosque was deliberately intended to be low-profile allowing nature to dominate it. The extended prayer hall was made transparent and open, allowing the internal spaces to be highly visible and physically accessible from all edges. The brick perforation and undulation was designed to catch shadows, thus mapping the passing of the day and the importance of time in the ritual of prayer. This combination of openness and transparency, of the acknowledgement of discipline and ritual within Islam, aspires to promote the notion that a mosque and Islam is approachable and accessible to all people at all times.
