Iqra’ Mosque

Alor Setar, Malaysia

Project Summary

Iqra’ Mosque was the project name that we gave for the option of total demolition and rebuild of Masjid Mohamad Iskandar Wan Tempawan, located in Jalan Datuk Kubar, Alor Setar, Kedah. This project was special because our client was Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The existing mosque was built using “wakaf” from his late father – Mohamad Iskandar and his mother Wan Tempawan Wan Hanapi – hence the name of the existing mosque. The form of Iqra’ Mosque was the abstraction of the Arabic alphabets in I-Q-R-A made into form. It was designed to fit 1200 worshippers, and sited next to a rice paddy, the abstract shape sat well as standing sculpture on the landscape. Sadly, the option was of demolish and rebuild was not the final direction, instead an extensive renovation on the existing mosque was made. We proposed to wrap an extension around the original mosque and the project commenced in 2016 to be completed in 2017 without ever interrupting the daily use of the existing mosque.
